Purusha & Prakriti: Spirit & Matter in
Ashtanga Yoga Practice
Yoga Sutra I.2: Yogash chitta vritti
nirodhah: Yoga is the suspension of
the fluctuations of the mind.
This workshop will highlight the
interplay of spirit and matter within
the Ashtanga Yoga Primary Series to
achieve Patanjali's goal of stilling
the fluctuations of the mind. Pattabhi
Jois advocates starting with the
tangible, malleable element of the
body to initiate more subtle changes
in the mind. We will explore how the
three gunas that constitute Prakriti,
tamas (heaviness), rajas (movement),
and sattva (light, intelligence), can
be used to bring us closer to an
understanding of Purusha,
consciousness.

Lori Brungard has been practicing yoga
for 25 years. She has spent over a
year in India studying with her
beloved teacher Sri K. Pattabhi Jois,
and holds an Authorized Level 2
teaching certificate through KPJAYI.
She teaches regular classes in New
York City at Ashtanga Sadhana, and as
an Adjunct Lecturer at Hunter College,
where she developed a curriculum for a
course in Ashtanga Yoga. As co-
director of Ashtanga Yoga Shala from
2002-2007, Lori developed courses as
resources for serious students and
teachers. To broaden her knowledge,
she completed Richard Freeman's
intensive in 2012, and has been
studying therapeutic applications of
yoga with the Mohan family since 2011.
Lori originally learned the many
facets of yoga through a year-long
certification in Jivamukti Yoga with
Sharon Gannon and David Life in 1999.

A professional modern dancer for more
than ten years, Lori learned a deep
awareness of human anatomy. Her work
as a Thai Yoga therapist has added an
energetic component to this
understanding. Her skills as a teacher
lie both in her sensitive hands-on
adjustments and her ability to see
underlying causes of challenges, and
thus how to create change.
