5. "Ashtanga, NY" Film Screenings
On September 1, 2001, the master of Ashtanga Yoga, Pattabhi "Guruji" Jois traveled to New York City with his family to teach a one-month workshop. Ashtanga students from all over the world gathered in lower Manhattan to attend his classes. Since Guruji and his family arrived ten days before, they experienced September 11 as New Yorkers and were as horrified as anyone else. But rather than freeze in the face of tragedy, Guruji continued teaching. Though much more subdued, his demeanor and practices took on heightened importance in the days after the attacks, bringing calm to his followers in a trying time. "Ashtanga, NY" is an inspirational film that documents a poignant period in many New Yorkers' lives. Directors Caroline Laskow and Mary Wigmore balance Ashtanga yoga's spiritual significance with its effect on the busy lives of New Yorkers and remind us that yoga is not just an aerobics trend, it is a spiritual experience intended to bring solace to the mind and soul as much as to the body.
